Who We Help

Real experience, applied to the people who need it.

Ascend is a young business built on a genuine track record. Tap any card for more on how that experience applies.

Organisations

Organisations & Businesses

Leadership development and team-building programmes for teams wanting to close performance gaps.

Delivered with the same instructional standards Paul used training Defence PTI courses and the Joint Officer Induction Course, built around your team's actual working environment, not a generic workshop.
Sport

Sports Teams & Clubs

Coaching and team management, drawing on Paul's current work coaching two youth football teams in Blenheim.

Hands-on coaching, session planning, and squad management for clubs that want the same discipline instilled in Paul's own teams.
Youth

Community & Youth Programmes

Ongoing support of CACTUS (Combined Adolescent Challenge Training Unit & Support), reflecting a genuine commitment to youth development.

CACTUS gives at-risk youth structure, challenge, and mentoring. Paul's involvement is ongoing, not a one-off sponsorship.
Individuals

Individuals

Personal training and facilitation experience across a range of community instructor roles.

Including Spin Instructor at Stadium 2000, F45 Blenheim coach, Futsal coach, Force Fit instructor, community PT for new mums, and Park Run recruitment facilitation.
How Paul Works

A straightforward approach, built on instructional discipline.

Ascend doesn't run on a trademarked framework. This is Paul's coaching philosophy in practice, and it stays open to change as the business grows.

01
Assess

Understand where a team or individual is now: strengths, gaps, and readiness, before anything is prescribed.

02
Instruct

Hands-on training and facilitation, drawing on military-grade instructional standards built over 25+ years.

03
Build

Team building, leadership development, and mentoring embedded into real working environments, not a classroom exercise.

04
Sustain

Ongoing support and community-style accountability, so performance gains hold once the programme ends.

About Paul

Twenty-five years of building people, on and off the parade ground.

Paul Stevens is a Physical Training Instructor and Sergeant with more than 25 years of military service across the Royal Navy and the New Zealand Defence Force, including deployment experience.

He has delivered instruction on RNZAF Recruit Training, the Joint Officer Induction Course (JOIC), and Defence Physical Training Instructor (PTI) courses, training the people who go on to train others.

Ascend Human Performance carries that same standard into organisations, teams, and communities: closing the gap between where people are and where they need to be.

Common Questions

Pain points Ascend gets called in for.

Ten situations that regularly bring organisations, clubs, and individuals to Paul.

Our leaders are technically skilled but struggle to actually lead people.
Being good at the job and being good at leading the people doing the job are different skill sets. Paul's instruction background is built specifically around teaching leadership as a trainable skill, not something people are simply expected to know.
We ran a team building day and nothing changed afterward.
A single offsite rarely shifts behaviour on its own. Ascend's approach builds team development into the working environment over time, with follow-through, rather than treating it as a one-day event.
New managers are promoted without ever being taught how to manage.
This is one of the most common gaps Paul sees. Structured instruction on leadership fundamentals, drawn from military officer and recruit training standards, gives new managers an actual framework instead of trial and error.
Performance is inconsistent across teams doing the same job.
Inconsistency usually points to unclear standards rather than a lack of effort. Ascend starts with an honest assessment of where each team actually stands before building a shared standard everyone is trained against.
People are motivated at the start, then it fades.
Motivation dips are normal. What sustains performance is accountability and support that continues after the initial push, which is why Ascend treats sustaining gains as its own ongoing step, not an afterthought.
Accountability gets talked about but nobody actually enforces it.
Accountability has to be modelled and practised, not just stated as a value. Paul's background instructing recruit and officer training is built entirely around holding people to a standard consistently.
Our coaches know the sport but haven't been trained to develop people.
Technical sports knowledge and player or athlete development are different disciplines. Ascend's coaching and team management experience focuses on the person being coached, not just the skill being taught.
Culture is slipping as we grow faster than we can manage.
Fast growth exposes gaps in leadership bandwidth quickly. Bringing in outside instruction and mentoring support gives a growing organisation extra leadership capacity while it builds its own.
Our young people need more than just training drills.
Structure, challenge, and mentoring matter as much as physical training for youth development. This is the exact space Paul works in through his ongoing involvement with CACTUS.
We are not sure where our biggest performance gaps actually are.
That uncertainty is the starting point, not a barrier. Every engagement with Ascend begins with an honest assessment of strengths, gaps, and readiness before any training or coaching is prescribed.
